ABOUT PROJECT project SHUMY ROSSII (aka NOISES of RUSSIA and LES BRUITS RUSSES) is a group of like-minded people, among which there are musicians, artists, painters, journalists, philologists. They are knit together by common interests and desire for self-expression and self-realization in various spheres (music, poetry, art, and theatre). The project has many fields of activity such as concerts, exhibitions, performances, happenings, acoustic experiments, video and sound art (making soundtracks for dances and films). The group's compositions could differ from one to ten participants depending on the specific program. The surface of human relations, importance of simple combinations of sounds, our impressions and associations are more important than simple search of God and of transcendentality and other attempts to reach into transcendent, into spiritual sphere with the help of art. We propose not only entirely this world way of thinking, but also using of all means of immersion into in cognizable in order to achieve simplest impact on the human mind thinking emotions feelings inner perception If formerly the memories, the association sequences and other methods pointed towards reaching the primordial, in cognizable sense were expropriated by psychology and other related branches now the game of ornaments, the word pattern of clear sensation are still remain on the surface creating the mystical background or psychical mood as all-sufficient phenomena, without additional "deep-seated" impulses. Thus the creative experience as well as recipient's experience are automatically increasing not for the purpose of receiving the new knowledge about ourselves and about the outward things, but for the purpose of consolation and purification which is catharsis. 1) The main impact on the listener makes the NOISE (with the particular importance of radio waves) rather than musical tone, although the tone music also is actual and important for us. As the noise itself it could be used as sample or as live sound. It doesn't matter for us, because the phonogram is equal to live performance. 2) As different SAMPLEs of sounds, texts, artworks made by us or by other authors are synthesizing during the creative process in a new, unexpected way the result of such synthesis is unique, unusual and even sudden. The idea of REPERTOIRE is not suitable for us. Every composition is performed only once, and this is the reason why we don't give them names and why we don't have REHEARSALs at all because for us there is no difference between rehearsal and performance. 3) We consider the creative work as ANONYMOUS act, because the idea of authorship is a question of money and money doesn't matter for us, or a question of ambitions, which also doesn't matter. From the one hand we consider our activity as POPULARIZATION and PROMOTION of creative ideas and the creative works of other authors in the situation of increasing cultural ignorance. From another hand we want to share with other people the great pleasure of discovering the new facets of art because in our interpretation somebody else's works are inevitably transformed. So in our case the idea PLAGIARISM doesn't exist or if you wish is basic. The other consequence of anonymity as our ideology is the using in the project's name the very abstract concept RUSSIA, without any detailed information about its participants (their amount could not be finite). 4) The main purpose of the art as well as of any other thing is SELF-DISCOVERY (it refers both creator and recipient) and RECIPROCITY of this process, when the individual perception modifies creative act and enriches it with new senses and theoretically leads to the transformation and transfiguration of individuum. Aforesaid doesn't belittle ENTERTAINING value of our activity. And if it makes somebody's (although our own) life better it seems us a good reason to continue and to consider it of some use. WARNING !!! AFTER A WHILE THE POINT OF VIEW COULD BE DIFFERENT J The made projects: 2002 INVISIBILITY AND LABOUR /music&video (2002) spirare-noise (50 min) Performed at SKIF-7 festival (April 2003). In the program "INVISIBILITY and LABOUR", which was successfully performed at the international music festival SKIF-7, we placed the emphasis on the increasing of the psychical influence on the spectator/listener. Intonation changes typical for non-stop performances – and SHUMY ROSSII always makes non-stop performances because we consider conditional both the bounds between the different compositions and creative finality in all its manifestations – so the intonation changes became stronger and more notable. Noise curtain gave place to sweet quiet harmonies, conceptual hysterics to ethereal whispers, dark sound landscapes to airspace full of rustles. The result of such suggestivity sometimes was unexpected and seemed like shock treatment. The noise with the special attention to radio waves began to play the main role in the influencing on listener/spectator. The same importance had texts used by the participants of the project. At different times we used for compilations lyrics of such groups as SWANS, CURRENT-93, LEGENDARY PINK DOTS, old Sumerian poetry, Maya mythologies, texts of Catholic mass, works of Russian poets Vladimir Buritch and Velemir Khlebnikov and our own poetry. 2003 EASEL PAINTING. SKETCHES №1 – №5. industrial-spirare-noise (40 min) video by Juriy Elik The program EASEL PAINTING opens anthology of industrial sound. The noises of industrial machines represent the monochrome part of spectrum of the industrial-sound palette, the retrospective sight of the XX century – the age when the heavy industry myth was born and was dethroned. The solists are machines. Their interaction with each other and with human voices, with harmonic polyphonies (so-called landscapes) and noises (music concrete) that appeared as accompaniment creates atonal and non-rhythmic sound picture which gives the spectator a rare chance to combine the work therapy with shock therapy. 2003-2004 NOISES of RUSSIA and OLGA KOMOK ( UT415) collaborative project CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARIA apocalyptic-folk-spirare-noise (45 min) video by Yuriy Elik (project 2012)S Performed at the SKIF-8 festival (April 2004). Olga Komok is a leader of the group LATERNA MAGICA that performs medieval music In this project the authentic medieval songs of XIII century were combined with contemporary spirare-noise music. In the program CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARIA performed by spirare-noise group SHUMY ROSSII and OLGA KOMOK (the leader of the medieval music collective LATERNA MAGICA) the authentic Spanish music of XIII-XIV centuries is placed into the dramatic sound landscape of the modern urban civilization. Old Spanish spiritual songs (cantigas) singing to the accompaniment of wheel lyre (it's a modern copy of XIV century instrument) are accompanied by harmonic polyphonies (so-called landscapes), noises (music concrete), industrials sounds and rhythms. CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARIA is a collection of 427 carefully copied and skilfully illustrated "cantiga" songs (a genre of old Spanish poetry about the miracles of Virgin Mary). It's not only anthology of poetic masterpieces composed in Galician-Portuguese language by the Spanish king Alfonso X, but also invaluable dictionary of the medieval music language and important statute book of iconographic documents that allow us to reconstruct the toolkit, used by ancient musicians, the way of performing songs and the details of court and religious feasts and everyday life of XIII century Spain. CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARIA is a monument of medieval culture and cult of Mother of God, which was the most important for Catholics in Middle Ages and is still alive nowadays. Cantigas tell about the different miracles of Virgin Mary: how She defeated basilisk and dragon in Toledo, how She saved drunk monks from the river near Salamanca, how She cured dying horse, how She catholicized Jews and exorcised the devil from the girl. Each story is full of true faith in the infinite mercy. Every tenth story is a the song of praise dedicated to Mother of God. Currently SHUMY ROSSII and OLGA KOMOK are preparing the release of their debut CD album UT415 (CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARIA) at the famous Russian label RECORD ONE. The launch is planned for February 2006. 2004 – 2005 HYDROPHOBIA ritual-industrial In our new program HYDROPHOBIA we continue investigations into the stereotypes of perception. If our latest program INVISIBILITY AND LABOUR was dedicated to the full disintegration of personality under the social pressure which is mechanizing all the life processes, the program HYDROPHOBIA materializes the response of individuum to the social aggression. The object dissection is mechanism of manifestation so-called forbidden emotions such as mystical joy, inexplicable sorrow, in-depth horror, catharsis which are opposed to the legalized feelings of cleanness, sterility, health, happy unconscious alcohol intoxication, enjoyment of material comforts. The project proposes its own version of ritual-industrial music with some elements of psychotropic impact. As usual we notify spectators/listeners that the visiting of our performance is a risk so we disclaim responsibility for all the consequences 2004 ELECTROSUMMER. SKETCH №1 summer-spirare-noise Placing the urban people (ourselves) into the nature we risk to lose the peace of mind and become mentally diseased. Shocking silence, exciting trembling of forest, full relaxation of mind can paralyse the human will and wish for living. The program is composed from the samples of natural sounds combining with polyphonic landscapes. 2004 LES BRUITS RUSSES. SONGS OF THE DEATH BIRD apocalyptic-christmas-noise video by Gosha Solntsev Christmas Sound performance which represents good mix of humor and tragedy is devoted to the Day of Independence of Finland. This is a signt of the Russian person on the problem of independence and expecially on the independence of Finland. 2004 – 2005 RELIGION 24793XPRO This program is a message to extraterrestrial civilizations about critical situation in religion on our planet.
